Pros and Cons of Home Furnaces

There are basically three types of furnaces available in the market. Furnaces are classifies depends upon the fuel it uses. All this types of furnaces has their advantages and disadvantages. So, before selecting any one type of furnace, understand their pros and cons.

Gas furnace

One of the widely selected furnace type is gas furnace. The home fitted with gas furnace is unlikely to feel any draft. The biggest advantage of gas furnace is the maximum temperature it attains. You will get around 120 to 130 degree Fahrenheit which is not possible with electric furnace.

Pros

  1. Gas furnace heats up your room faster and at the same time consumes less energy.
  2. Life span of gas furnace is higher than other type of furnaces.
  3. Quite effective as zone heating
  4. Economical to maintain and operate

Cons

  • It depends on the gas supply.
  • Risk of fire is more than other types of furnaces
  • Gas is corrosive in nature. So, replacement of some of the parts is inevitable.

Electric furnace

Most compact and efficient types of furnace are electric furnace. It produces heat by converting electrical energy in to heat energy by using special wire. The special wire also refer to as element is very efficient in converting electric energy to heat energy.

Efficiency of electric furnace is higher than any other type of furnaces. There is an automatic thermostat which controls the warmness of room. It is easy to maintain. Electric furnace is cheaper than other types of furnaces.

Advantages

  • Installation is easy
  • Does not require any extra piping, ducting etc.
  • No Moving parts.
  • Less maintenance.
  • Easy to use in odd places like attic, basements etc.
  • Can be adopted to use existing ducts.
  • Cleaner than other two.

Disadvantages

  1. The running cost is higher then other two types of furnaces.
  2. You have to depend on the local electrical supply. If there is no electrical supply then electrical furnace does not work whereas other two types of furnaces worked independent of electrical supply.

Oil furnace

Oil furnaces are very old and still operating well throughout the country. Most old system of oil furnaces function as room heater as well as getting the hot water for domestic use.

Advantages

  1. Robust design.
  2. Gives very high temperatures.
  3. Only one oil furnace may be sufficient for entire two or three story house with many rooms.
  4. Easy regulation of heat.

Disadvantages

  1. Low fuel efficiency compare with other furnaces.
  2. Periodical maintenance is needed for smooth operation.
  3. Maintenance is very massy. Generally require professional help.
  4. Oil Nozzle should be replaced regularly.
  5. Chimney is needed
